The San Diego Gas Light District
San Diego has taken an older part of downtown and done some wonderful remodeling, upgrading, and general sprucing up including some very period street lights, hence the name Gas Light District. Petco Park, the new ballpark built for the San Diego Padres was strategically place in the Gas Light District as part of the overall renovation of the district. There is plenty of great shopping from boutiques and small specialty shops to larger chain stores and a mall, and of course plenty of night-life bars, lounges, and saloons.
The outstanding Gaslamp District is a National Historic District. The 16 block area now houses the most popular restaurants, nightclubs, shops, and Victorian-style commercial buildings. San Diego had its beginning when businessman Alonzo Horton, founder of downtown San Diego, first built his wharf at the foot of Fifth Avenue in 1869.
